Do you suffer from the sin of having a good opinion of yourself?

by Patte Smith on Monday, March 28, 2011 at 12:28pm

...there is nothing which prevents a man coming to Christ like a good opinion of himself.
~ CH Spurgeon

Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find.
~ Proverbs 20:6

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
~ Jeremiah 17:9

God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.
~ 1 Peter 5:5b

When pride comes, then comes shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.
~ Proverbs 11:2

Pride goes before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
~ Proverbs 16:18

A man's pride shall bring him low: but honor shall uphold the humble in spirit.
~ Proverbs 29:23

Pride is the greatest sacrilege; it robs God of his glory...Oh, let us search if there is none of this leaven of pride in us. Man is naturally a proud piece of flesh; this sin runs in the blood. Our first parents fell by their pride. They aspired to deity. There are the seeds of this in the best, but the godly do not allow themselves in it. They strive to kill this weed by mortification. But certainly where this sin reigns and prevails, it cannot stand with grace.
~ Thomas Watson

I used to think, in my youth, that I was pretty good, at least compared to those around me, ahhhh, such foolishness! I praise God that He has progressively revealed to me my true nature, so that finding nothing good in myself, I can discard self in order to be filled with Him and His goodness!

Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.
~ Jeremiah 17:7

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time He may exalt you.
~ I Peter 5:6

Yet I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my help and my deliverer; O my God ...
~ Psalm 40:17

For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
~ Jesus in Matthew 23:12, Luke 14:11;18:14

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.
~ James 4:10

Sooner or later such who are humbled shall be exalted. It is the usual way and method which God takes to abase the proud, and exalt the humble; for humble souls honour Him, and therefore such as honour Him He will honour; and this He does in His own time, in a time that makes most for His glory, and their good; Oftentimes He does it in this life, and always in that which is to come.
~ John Gill

God appointed the Jews to make fringes upon their garments, Nu 15:38, to remind them of their being a peculiar people; but the Pharisees made them larger than common, as if they were thereby more religious than others. Pride was the darling, reigning sin of the Pharisees, the sin that most easily beset them, and which our Lord Jesus takes all occasions to speak against... How much is all this against the spirit of Christianity! The consistent disciple of Christ is pained by being put into chief places. But who that looks around on the visible church, would think this was the spirit required? It is plain that some measure of this antichristian spirit prevails in every religious society, and in every one of our hearts.
~ Matthew Henry
